Olympic Triathlon Team Members Give Strong Showing in Canada
by B.J. Hoeptner - USA Triathlon
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 10, 2000) -- Led by U.S. Olympic team member Jennifer Gutierrez's third-place finish, the U.S. women put on a strong showing at the ITU Pizza Hut Toronto World Cup on Saturday. Later, Ryan Bolton (Gillette, Wyo.) led the U.S. men with his sixth-place finish.
Carol Montgomery of Canada won the women's race in 1 hour, 56 minutes, 20 seconds. Her Canadian teammate Sharon Donnelly was second in 1:56:37. Gutierrez (San Antonio, Texas) finished in 1:57:42, beating out Australian champion Michellie Jones (1:58:10) for third place.
Twenty-five women started the race, cheered on by a crowd estimated at 15,000, which lined the course they hope will be used for the 2008 Olympic Games.
Gutierrez and U.S. Olympic teammate Sheila Taormina (Livonia, Mich.) took the lead in the swim along with Luxembourg's Nancy Kemp-Arendt and Donnelly. Before the race, Gutierrez said she and Taormina would be working on strategies that could help them in the Olympic race in Sydney.
Due to technical problems, Kemp-Arendt pulled out of the race during the bike, but Gutierrez, Donnelly and Taormina stayed in front, putting over two minutes on the chase pack of about 15 women.
Montgomery made her move during the run, and by the third lap had caught everyone but Donnelly. Midway through the fourth and final lap, she caught Donnelly and went on to win easily.
Taormina went on to place fifth (1:20:25), and was followed by U.S. Olympic team alternate Siri Lindley (Greenwich, Conn.) in sixth (1:22:56).
Following the women's race, the men's field of 50 entered Lake Ontario.
U.S. Olympic team members Hunter Kemper (Longwood, Fla.) and Ryan Bolton (Gillette, Wyo.) and fellow U.S. triathlete Michael Smedley (Buchanan, Mich.) were part of a chase pack that caught the lead group about 10km into the bike. Craig Watson of New Zealand eventually pulled away and got of the bike with a lead of over a minute.
But a strong group of runners, including Bolton, took charge, setting an intense pace. Great Britain's Simon Lessing, Venezuela's Gilberto Gonzalez and Kazakstan's Dimitry Gaag eventually took control of this group, with Lessing winning the race in 1:46:41, followed by Gonzalez (1:46:56) and Gaag (1:47:02).
Bolton placed sixth (1:47:32) and Kemper finished in eighth (1:47:49). U.S. Olympic alternate Victor Plata (Santa Cruz, Calif.) was 13th. Other U.S. men in the top 20 were Doug Friman (Alameda, Calif.; 15th), Andy Kelsey (Cupertino, Calif.; 16th) and Smedley (18th).
